Top these easy homemade bagels with cream cheese for breakfast or layer with meat, cheese and vegetables for lunch. No matter how you like them, bagels are a favorite of many families, mine included.
About two years ago, I started making homemade bagels. I always thought they would be hard to make and that it would be cheaper and easier to buy them already made. I found the opposite to be true. They are quite easy, very tasty, and much cheaper than ready made.
This size and quality bagel is only available through bakeries and will set you back anywhere from $2 – $5 for each bagel. Making them homemade costs about $2 for a batch of 12 bagels.
So, roll up your sleeves, and coat your hands with flour as I take you on the journey of making homemade bagels.
Easy Homemade Bagels
- 4 ¼ cups flour
- 2 tablespoons yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon molasses
In large bowl, combine 1 ½ cups of flour and the yeast; mix well and set aside.
Mix warm water, sugar, and salt together. Add to dry ingredients and mix well (dough will be very sticky).
Add remaining flour to make stiff dough. Using your hands, mix dough until flour is well incorporated into mix.
Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl. I set the dough on the counter and grease the same bowl I used for mixing. Cover with dish towel and let rest for 20 minutes.
Punch down dough and place dough on floured surface and knead for five minutes. I rarely knead any of my breads for more than four minutes. The longer you knead your dough, the tougher your bread is.
Poke thumb through center and enlarge the hole, working the bagel into a uniform shape.
Note: When shaping do not flatten or bagels will not rise when cooking.
Cover bagels with dish towels and let rise for 40 minutes.
Bring one gallon of water to rapid boil in large kettle. Add molasses to water and mix until dissolved.
10. Place 3 to 4 bagels in water. Boil for 6 to 7 minutes. When done, remove with slotted spoon and place on cooling rack until excess water drains off the bagels.
11. Place bagels on greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with your favorite seasonings or leave plain. Bake at 350° F for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven, cool and place in storage bags.
*Tip* Adding molasses to the cooking water gives your bagels a nice golden color.
